David Bowie

With the late unfortunate events, my interest was attracted by an artist that i always intended to observe but never did.

The funny thing is that even before starting listening his works, i already had a favourite song of him. The song "Heroes", was the main track of the movie "The Perks of Being a Wallflower". However i never did search for the track.

David Bowie as a true inspiration. Over the years he steps into the shoes of different characters made by himself really ably and gives life to them. My personal favourite is the " The Thin White Duke".

His last song "Blackstar" is really good in my opinion. The experience he earned throughout the years say their word. The song is rich in musical themes and is rich in musical instruments as well. The track lyrics are about the last days and eventually death of the famous people. In the song the death is described as a lonely one.

In the villa of Ormen, in the villa of Ormen
Stands a solitary candle, ah-ah, ah-ah
In the centre of it all, in the centre of it all
Your eyes

Something happened on the day he died
Spirit rose a metre and stepped aside
Somebody else took his place, and bravely cried
(I’m a blackstar, I’m a blackstar)

I connect the blackstar to the astrological black dwarf. The black dwarves are a dead stars. And when one celebrity turns into a blackstar somebody else is taking their place.

It could be seen that Bowie stepped into the shoes of a new character. His eyes are covered and there are tiny black points on their place. He is dressed as an elderly man.

Bowie is definitely an insparation for a future artists.

Improving My skills

Improving My skills

I aim to improve my skills on my main instrument that is guitar. But as well I want to start practicing a piano, vocals and drums.

I have a lot more to learn on the guitar. Soloing techniques mainly. There is a lot of way that I must go and a lot of practicing to give to become able to perform with confidence.

I have started putting a lot of effort, time and energy in drumming as well. With every day practicing for two weeks I’ve managed to play almost flawlessly Orion by Metallica.

I have started visiting a vocal lessons as well. Some positive feedback received there but I must practice a lot in matter to gain a good amount of confidence to represent what I can offer. The same goes for the piano as well.

Pro Tools

We’ve started using a program called Pro Tools to record Our own pieces. I have only been ever used Audacity to record some covers, so I was a something new and definitely helpful.

For first time I was encouraged to create my own piece. I had some ideas using electric guitar but Pro tools was unable to be connected with some kind of amp and I have searched for add-ons or plugins but there was nothing. So I realized that I could connect the microphone and record the incoming sound from the distorted guitar with it. It worked in some way but I will work more  about this topic in future to solve this problem.

Varieties

“ I asked Jim what all these types of music had in common. His answer was that this was the wrong question. Jim said that the right question to ask, In trying to understand music’s universality, is not what all musics have in common but how they differ”(Levitin,D) – The world in six songs.
We explored a variety of different cultures and how they use their drumming instruments.  I was stunned by the facts that a few women who were standing still in a water started clapping their hands against the liquid and created sounds that really could be named “music”. It was really interesting to watch such thing. We All started suggesting different theories what were the women celebrating or maybe they were just having fun. I was amazed that this is some kind of ritual mimicking washing clothes.

Another great example are the African celebrations and how Africans use only rhythm and drums to create music. I never knew that they use only one word for both dancing and music. It was amazing to hear that with drums only you could actually create a melody as well.

Could be heard that some drums have lower notes than others and this creates really nice sounds gathered together.
Most of all the Japanese taiko war drums were so magnificent and implanting a courage and a war spirit.

Something quite more modern is the Top Secret Drum Corps. Those guys are astonishing. Seeing a rhythm and choreography at such level is amazing. It is hard to combine those elements with such precision. I stick to the point that combined different drums , they could create something far more than just a rhythm, there is a certain melody inside every drum.

These videos and especially Levitin’s quote changed my way of looking at music. These all pieces are common by the way that they are performed by drumming only but they differ as well. Each culture differs in the way that they create music as well. “ The right question is how music differs”

How i see myself as a musician.

Purvi post

Creating music is not easy.
Since I was a child I was doing music in one way or another. My parents always inspired me by showing me a great musicians as Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Fredy Mercury and many more famous and awesome bands like Metallica, White Snake etc. I guess my first inspiration began at this early point when I had touch with this bands for a first time.

When I grown up I have began doing music on stage more and more and when I was a high school student I said to my parents that I want to study music abroad and to become a musician.
One of my Idols – Dave Grohl – The current lead member of the band Foo Fighters says “ That’s one of the greatest things about music. You can sing a song to 85,000 people and they’ll sing it back for a 85,000 different reasons. “ I can definitely relate to that statement because in different stages of my life with different points of view  I could relate differently to one and the same song. I guess with a different life story each person can relate to a song in his unique way.

My Biggest inspiration is The band Metallica. I literally stare at them and imagine myself on the stage playing music created by myself.  I always wanted to travel around the world, this have always been my greatest desire.  I could say that I see myself as a performer along with a band touring around the world, traveling and connecting with different kind of people.

My Goals are to take as much as possible as knowledge and experience from the university by the time I am student and develop myself as a promising and capable performer and musician. My primary plan is, During the time of my studying or after my graduation to meet people with same ideas and interests as mine and start performing on stage as much as possible like I used to in my years back in Bulgaria.
